100 days of : chapter 6

I’m taking part in the 100 Day Project , but I’m doing it in my own time, thank you very much, I never said it was 100 CONSECUTIVE days, did I? Just as well I didn’t because I took a good few days off during the most recent phase. I’ve had a touch of RSI (repetitive sewing injury) in my hand, and decided to give it a rest. I then went off galivanting for the weekend, and when I came back I didn’t pick up my stitching for ages, it’s so easy to get out of the habit. It doesn’t matter though, I will complete the 100 days, no matter how long it takes me.
I exchanged fabric with 9 other members of a Facebook group I belong to, and we are using each others pieces in our 100 Day Projects. You can read about the previous exchanges here : chapter 1  chapter 2  chapter 3  chapter 4  chapter 5
Until now the people I swapped with sent me an 8×6 inch, or smaller, piece for me to work with. However Cynthia Temple sent me an envelope very generously stuffed with all manner of interesting fabric and also some really intersting papers that she had printed on. When spread out the fabric and paper covered a meter squared, easily!
I spent a long time playing with this lot : laying it out, arranging it, re-arranging it, re-re-arranging it , but I just could not decide what to do with it. I was overwhelmed and paralysed by indecision because I had so much choice. Eventually I decided to cut 36 one inch squares from the fabrics, and I wrote the numbers 1-36 on the back of them.

I then enlisted the help of  members of a Facebook group and asked them to choose 4 numbers from 1-36. I  used their choice of numbers to create nine 2 inch squares. Here they are, individually, with added stitching. From top left to bottom right they are:
5,9,11,17.  8,19,27,36.  12,21,13,24.  1,3,30,22.  2.6.10,34.   35,15,7,31.  16,29,32,33.  23,28,26,20.  and the 4 that were left over.
And here they are huddled together for warmth..

I also made use of the handprinted papers Cynthia sent me. They are deli paper (fine translucent dry wax paper, not sure if there is a UK equivalent, I’m investigating and will report back) that she  printed  using a Gelli plate  (which is on my “must try” list). But that’s a whole nother blogpost.

Meanwhile, Cynthia was working with the 8 x 6 inch piece that I sent her.
Here’s what she did with it

They are part of a series, can you spot the theme?Cynthias 100 Day Project is fantastic so far, she is using textiles, and mixed media to make 100 double sided pieces that will be sewn together when finished.
Check it out here
For the next phase of my 100 Day Project I will be using this piece that I received from Anne-Marie Desaulniers, which will be a challenge because it’s already a work of art!
See you back here when I’m done, whenever that might be .

Chapter 7 is here

  1. What a great explanation and absolutely love what you did with your fabrics!

  2. I can’t do 100 day projects in consecutive days either, but I figure that whatever I get done and whenever I get it done is better for me!

  3. What a fab idea. Guess what my next workshops are going to be. Always looking for new ideas. Many thanks
